I think it’s time I let everyone in on the best-kept secret in the realm of port wines and desserts. Now this is a Middle Eastern spin of food pairing and dates back to when I first started dating my fiancé Anita, an Armenian Goddess (thanks for fixing that for me honey…) a few years back. This marriage of cultural differences gave me a newfound respect for Baklava.
So one day we hosted a film premier party (We make films and commercials) we served the Prager Port called Aria and a tray of Baklava from our favorite Armenian pasty shop (Sarkis Pastry) in Glendale.

JACKPOT! It was total Heaven… we all melted into one big grin. The combination was a huge success. The Aria alone will make you believe in God and to pair it with the flaky pastry dough, sweet sugar drizzle and pistachio nut combo just brought me to my knees.
The Aria is the best port wine I have ever tasted and I highly doubt I will ever find another to compete with it. It’s a very unique white port made of Chardonnay grapes grown in the Napa Valley Carneros region. The next time your in Napa I HIGHLY recommend you pay the Prager Winery a visit and be sure to visit Sarkis Pasty the next time your in Glendale.
Enjoy! Want to make Baklava at home?

AHHHH! YES!!! Prager….One of. if not the best producer of Port Wines. I am secretly guarding a 2002 Aria White Port, a 2005 Sweet Clare Reisling and a 2003 Petite Syrah (no longer in circulation I believe). And it is true, this is a fantastic desert wine that I have ever tasted as far as ports go. They are excellant alone, but when paired with any desert, it truely is a Religious experience. The only other time I was inraptured by a desert wine was about 4 years ago when my now son in law introduced me to a 1999 Late Harvest Cabernet from Van Der Heyden Winery in the Napa Valley. To me, this wine was soo intoxicating that I dared not drink it, knowing the the aroma and the flavor would soon be but a distant memory. I spent about 10 minuets just taking in the thick rich black berry, black cherry and chocolet aroma that this wine notes. And yes it tasted exactly the way it smelled, Heavenly. You must try them both, you will not be dissapointed…….
Go Prager! Go Baklava! Yum Yum Good times!
OMG! You are very right about the Van Der Heyden Late Harvest Cabernet. Truly remarkable. I’m also a fan of their Late Harvest Merlot.
Oh and don’t forget the Van Der Heyden White Table wine – that’s a big hit too!
Frank, I haven’t had time to pare, but have found OWNING bottles (plural intended) of Prager Aria NOT AN OPTION! It is, as you have said, ‘THE BAR’ in Port! Thanks ! Jerry
