For many of us the idea of owning a vineyard and producing a quality Napa wine is just a fantasy, but for Tom Burgess it’s a reality. After traveling the world with the United States Air force, Tom’s love for wine and adventure brought him to the Napa Valley, and in 1972, Burgess Cellars was born. For over 37 years Tom has been living the American Dream and producing great wines to share with the world.
My wife and I met Tom at the winery to reminisce about the rich history tied to his winery. Before it was Burgess Cellars it was Chateau Souverain and the winemaker was Leland Stewart. As we stood there overlooking this breathtaking view I began to imagine what it must have been like. It was here that winemakers Mike Grgich and Warren Winiarski learned the art of viniculture first hand.
A Tradition of Excellence
Tom continues that legacy by producing an amazing Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Not only could we taste the current release, but also his limited 1995 vintage selection. This wine is truly impressive with big, beautiful aromas of mocha, cigar box and rich currents of chocolate covered cherries and toasty oak. This special wine is ready to drink now and available for only $68.
As we stood there tasting wine and sharing stories in the dim light of the barrel room, I closed my eyes and wondered to myself, “How amazing would it be to call this home?”
Burgess Cellars welcomes visitors from 10am – 4pm daily. Tasting are appointment only and can be scheduled by calling (800) 752-9463 or email wines@burgesscellars.com
Now Tom was an amazing man to meet. I have to say he's like a pillar of American society. I imagined him in the 70's as a John Wayne character. Flying airplanes for the Air Force and traveling the world. I still want to know what encouraged him to buy a land of grapes, wine and dreams and spend the rest of his life dedicated to farming them, blending them and creating the fruit of life. WINE!
Viniculture is indeed an art. The best wines are produced by creative individuals with a love of fine wines.
May Tom continue living his dream for many years!
Cheers!!!
